Funeral services for Virginia “Sue” Phillips, 87, of Lufkin will be held Monday, May 27, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Stephen Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in the Shofner Cemetery in Huntington.
Mrs. Phillips was born May 31, 1931 in Angelina County, Texas to the late Dovie Mildred (Jones) and Murry C. Mathis, and left this earth Thursday, May 23, 2019 in Lufkin.
Sue was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt. She loved being outdoors and could often be found gardening, working in her yard, fishing, hunting, or trekking across the US on her next great adventure. She shared her love with family and friends playing 42 or whipping up her next meal in the kitchen. Always ready to lend a helping hand, there was nothing she would not do for her family. She will be dearly missed by many.
Survivors include her daughter, Shelia Phillips Wideman; son and daughter-in-law, DeWayne and Ann Phillips; daughters, Ruby Garrett and Rebecca Downs; 25 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Juanita “Nita” Sweat; sister-in-law, Margie Mathis; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Bobby and Sharon Smith.
She was preceded in death by husband, Elray Brown; husband, Tip Phillips; daughters, Jerri Lynn Brown and Glenda Joyce Atchison; sons, Linray Brown, Ray Phillips, and Eddie Phillips; sons-in-law, Gary Bob Wideman and Stephen “Pete” Montes; brothers, Murry, Jr., Newel, Kirk, JC, and Billy Mathis; sisters, Mildred Dias and Cleo Rawlinson; and best friend, Sue Shelton.
Pallbearers will be Paul Phillips, Stephen Phillips, Kevin Montes, Kyle Montes-Valdivia, Kevin LaForge, and Travis King.
Honorary pallbearers will be Brandy Boriskie, Miranda Bartley, Dana Rodgers, Gena King, Tonya LaForge, Wendy Phillips, Keith Rodgers, Jeff Howle, Jamie Wideman, Marshall Inman, Morgan Inman, Stephen Boriskie, and Thomas Bartley.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Heart to Heart Hospice, 2102 S. John Redditt Drive, Lufkin, Texas 75904 or The American Cancer Society, 212 Gene Samford Drive, Lufkin, Texas 75904 or to a charity of your choice.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.
