Joseph "Joe" Flood

January 18, 1959 — January 31, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joseph Dean Flood, who left us too soon.

Joe was born on January 18, 1959, in Philadelphia, PA, to William J. Flood and Margaret Jane Thomas. As the son of a military family, Joe spent his childhood moving frequently, attending 11 schools in 12 years. He lived in Germany, Hawaii, Washington, California, Pennsylvania, and Texas - a journey that shaped his adaptability and deep appreciation for people from all walks of life.

While serving four years in the United States Air Force in Maine, Joe pursued his education at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, always eager to expand his knowledge and skills.

Joe eventually settled in Big Spring, TX, where he met the love of his life, Cheryl Ann Pawlik. They married in 1984 and built a life filled with love, friendship, and mutual support. Whether working side by side in the community or enjoying life’s simple pleasures, they were true partners in every sense.

Joe dedicated his career to Brown’s Shoe Fit, where he became the owner and operator of the Lufkin location. Known for his friendly demeanor and commitment to customer service, he didn’t just sell shoes - he made connections. His customers weren’t just transactions; they were friends and neighbors, and he took pride in making sure every person left with not just the right fit, but a brighter day.

Beyond work, Joe was an avid bowler, accomplishing 13 perfect 300 games, a passion that took him all over the country as he competed in various amateur leagues and tournaments. Whether rolling strikes in his local alley or traveling to compete with fellow bowlers, Joe found camaraderie, challenge, and pride in the sport. His love for bowling wasn’t just about the game - it was about the friendships and the sense of community he found within it.

Joe also found joy in golf, spending time at the ranch in Goliad, TX, and gathering with family. He was a steady presence at Pawlik and Pfeifer family reunions, where he was known for his warmth, humor, and ability to connect with anyone. His kind and easygoing nature made him someone people naturally gravitated toward.

Joe’s deep faith was a guiding force in his life, and he served his church and community with unwavering dedication. As chairperson of the Finance Council and a member of the Bishop’s Guild, he worked tirelessly to support St. Patrick Catholic Church & School, whether by counting collections or contributing to key financial decisions. He was also a devoted board member for The Joseph House Hospice, ensuring compassionate care for those in need.

Even in small moments, Joe had a way of bringing light and joy to those around him. A recent memory from his pastor captures this perfectly—two friends, caught up in the spontaneity of chasing a cat together, laughing like kids. Joe had a gift for making people feel at ease and reminding them to enjoy life’s little moments.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, William J. Flood and Margaret Jane Thomas, and his in-laws, Louis Pawlik and Mary Pfeifer Pawlik.

He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Cheryl Ann Flood (Pawlik); his brothers, Jim Flood and Steve Flood; and his brothers- and sisters-in-law, who shared a deep bond and countless cherished memories with him: Mary Lou Fragile, Jimmy Pawlik (Holly Smith), Toni Beth (Travis) Schaar, JoElla (Robert) Wagner, and Timothy (Carrie) Pawlik.

He was a cherished uncle to his many nieces and nephews, including Kristen (Chris) Dorwart, Kolette Keenan, Chris (Jessica) Fragile, Matt (Stacy) Fragile, Morgan (Chris) Hernandez, Mallory (Kristy) Schaar, Taylor (Michelle) Schaar, Sarah Stanley, Haley (Matt) Townsend, Russell Wagner, Eric (Lindsay) Verbit, and Matt (Nicole) Verbit. His love extended beyond family to his loyal pets, Little Bum, Chula, Precious, and Bandit.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 7 at Carroway Funeral Home, with Rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 8 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Lufkin, Texas. Military honors will follow Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Joe’s honor to The Joseph House, P.O. Box 150554, Lufkin, Texas 75915 or St. Patrick Catholic School, 2118 Lowry Street, Lufkin, Texas 75901 - organizations that reflect his heart for helping others.

Pallbearers are his nephews, Chris Fragile, Matt Fragile, Taylor Schaar, Russell Wagner, Eric Verbit, and Matt Verbit.

Joe will be remembered for his kind heart, steady presence, unwavering support for his community, and of course, his love for bowling. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
