James E. Holmes

Funeral services for James E. Holmes, 83, of Lufkin will be held Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Eric Peyton officiating. Interment will follow in the Gann Cemetery. The family requests that mask be worn and COVID guidelines be followed.

Mr. Holmes was born July 14, 1937 in the Clawson Community of Angelina County, Texas to the late Easter Virginia (Finley) and William McKinley Holmes, and died Friday, March 5, 2021 in a local hospital.

Mr. Holmes was a lifetime resident of Angelina County. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from TxDOT following 38 years of employment. During his career he served nine counties and assumed a number of responsibilities, including Construction Supervisor and Safety Coordinator and Inspector. At work he was known as “Bull”.

Mr. Holmes was an active member and deacon of Lancewood Baptist Church. He loved his church family and playing 42 with them was a part of his social life that he enjoyed immensely. Mr. Holmes was very family oriented and known for maintaining his home well. He even enjoyed mowing the yard.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Carol Lee (Warren) Holmes of Lufkin; daughter, Jana McNeil of Lufkin; grandchildren, Katie Elise Conner and James Tyler McNeil, both of Lufkin; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Charlene Holmes of Lufkin; sister-in-law, Claire (Hunter) Holmes of Lufkin; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, James Darnell “Finny” Holmes; and siblings, Elray Brown, Lester Brown, Charlene Keller, Frances Waymire, Billy Jack Holmes, and Weldon Gene Holmes.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon prior to the services.
