Amos Chapman Boynton

Funeral services for Amos Chapman Boynton – Lufkin Panther, 76, of Lufkin will be held Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Bryan Lipscomb officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery. Mr. Boynton was born October 11, 1940 in Lufkin, Texas to the late Berniece (Teutsch) and Robert Register Boynton, and died Tuesday, November 8, 2016 in a local hospice facility. Mr. Boynton received a Bachelor of Science degree in History from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches and a Master’s degree in History from Texas Southern University in Houston. He taught school at Channelview High School in the early 1970’s before becoming a professional musician. His band, “The ABC’s”, played in many venues in Houston and across the state. He also played drums on occasion with musicians like Mickey Gilley, B. J. Thomas, and Johnny Winter. Later in life he moved back to the Lufkin area and taught school to inmates at the Diboll Prison Unit. Survivors include sons, Brett Boynton and Donny Boynton, both of Houston; ex-wife, Roseann Boynton of Pasadena; stepson, Michael Hughlett of Hudson; stepdaughter, Melanie Hughlett of New Caney; grandchildren, Micah Boynton of Fort Collins, Colorado, Shay Boynton of Pasadena, River Boynton of Dickinson, Ellie Boynton, Mason Boynton, both of Houston, Miranda Barge of Central, Ocean Hughlett and Megan Hughlett, both of Hudson; brothers, Dr. Jim Boynton and wife Corrie of Austin, Norris “Tooter” Boynton and wife Kathryn of Magnolia; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Shane Boynton; brother, Robert “Bobby” Boynton; and ex-wife, Beverly Hughlett. Pallbearers will be John Lee Slaughter, Mike Darham, Ardie Dixon, Phillip Morris, Cecil Roach, and Charles Wheeler. The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Sunday prior to the services.
