Funeral services for Willie “Geneva” Redd, 97, of Lufkin, will be held Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Elwyn M. Gipson Memorial Chapel in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park with Dr. Walter Futch officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories.
Mrs. Redd was born January 11, 1916 in Denton, Texas to the late Minnie Sarah Volina (Cleveland) Smyth and William Sidney Smyth. She died Sunday, October 20, 2013 in a Lufkin hospice facility.
Mrs. Redd lived through the Great Depression. During World War II, she worked in civil service for the Navy in Corpus Christi and in Pasadena in ship building. She also worked for the Army at Camp Howze and in Aberdene, Maryland. She attended Denton High School and studied at Texas Women’s University for 2 year, majoring in Business Administration and minoring in English. She took a year off from college to study dance. Mrs. Redd was the title of Miss Denton at the age of 18 and 19 (1934-1935), dancing and singing. She also worked for Lufkin National Bank for more than 20 years as a drive-thru teller. Mrs. Redd was a Charter Member of Trinity Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Pamela Redd of Nacogdoches and Cecelia Parrish of Lufkin; grandchildren, Michael Parrish, Eric Parrish, both of Lufkin, Scott Brandon of Dallas, and Charlotte Miley of Nacogdoches; eight great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
Mrs. Redd was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Ralph Redd.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to until service time at the Elwyn M. Gipson Memorial Chapel.
