George Samson Hurst

Funeral services for George S. Hurst, 90, of Lufkin, will be held Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 12:30 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin with Reverend Mark Forrest and Reverend Bob Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mr. Hurst was born July 22, 1921 in Winnfield, Louisiana to the late Annie Belle (Mullins) and Hugh Lawson Hurst. He died Tuesday, April 10, 2012 in a Huntington nursing facility.
Mr. Hurst was retired from DuBose Tractor. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and his church, Fuller Springs Missionary Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Hurst had resided in Lufkin since 1957.
Survivors include his daughter, Peggy Dunn of Milam; grandchildren, Russell Gibson and wife Sharon of San Saba, Texas, Cindy Murray and husband Tony of Lufkin; Marianne Wright of Groveton, John Benson and wife Laurie of Humble, David Benson and wife Burnedette of Humble, and Monica May of Humble; fifteen great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Preceding Mr. Hurst in death were the love of his life, his wife of 60 years, Vernie Lucille Hurst, in 2006; one son, Arthur Benson; sisters, Shirley Callaway and Louise Warren; and brother, R.P. Hatcher.
Pallbearers will be Russell Gibson, John Benson, David George Benson, Cory Murray, Tony Murray and Jim Woods.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fuller Springs Missionary Baptist Church, 5003 Fuller Springs Dr., Lufkin, Texas 75901; or Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Ave., Lufkin, Texas 75904.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
