Joseph George Eckenrode, 88, of Pollok died Saturday, July 21, 2012 in a local nursing home. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.
Mr. Eckenrode was born December 19, 1923 in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. A former resident of Houston, he had resided in Pollok since 1979.
Mr. Eckenrode served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, from January 1942 thru January 1946. He served 2 1/2 years in the Pacific Theater, and received the Purple Heart and several Unit Citations. He retired from the Houston Police Department following 27 years of service, and from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department following 20 years of service.
Mr. Eckenrode was a lifetime member of the DAV Post #84, VFW Post 1836, as well as the Purple Heart Association. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Edwanna Eckenrode of Pollok; sons, Joseph George Eckenrode, Jr. and Thomas Edward Eckenrode, both of Lebanon, Pennsylvania; daughter, Cynthia Ann Hosteter of Lebanon, Texas; stepdaughter, Susie Bordenkercher of Lufkin; stepsons, Robert Janisch of Houston, Billy Janisch of Lufkin, Brent Malinowski of Houston, Shannon Philpot of Spring and Chad Holland of Harker Heights, Pennsylvania; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister, Virginia Neely of Kerrville.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 30 years, Eluise W. Eckenrode; father, George Joseph Eckenrode; mother, Pauline (Young) Eckenrode; and brother, Edward Paul Eckenrode.
