Zora Geraldine "Jerry" Mccaskill

January 29, 1936 — August 18, 2022

Zora Geraldine “Jerry” McCaskill was born in Ocala, Florida January 29, 1936 to the late Clifford H. and Hazel B. Baxter. A member of Northside Baptist Church of Victoria, she passed away August 18, 2022 in Huntington, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, William A. McCaskill Sr., her beloved grandmother and step-grandfather, William H. and Zora B. Tiller of Ocala, Florida, and nephew, Richard A. Eaton of Columbia, South Carolina. She is survived by her son, William A. McCaskill, Jr., granddaughter, Lauren E. Stacy, and grandson, William A. McCaskill III.

She graduated from Webster High School in Webster, Texas in 1953 and spent many years working as a secretary, bookkeeper and held a Radio Station Engineers License at KTXN-FM. She was a member of the Houston Youth Symphony while in high school and played the oboe and piano. Along with her husband, they owned and operated the Putt-Putt Golf Course in Victoria for 38 years.

She was a volunteer for Hospice of South Texas, Pets Are Worth Saving, Kiwanitas Club, Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Support Group, and the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. While active with the American Cancer Society, she served on the Board of Directors along with chairing the Survivors’ Celebrations, Tell-A-Friend to Have a Mammogram campaigns, Kids Against Cancer fundraisers and as the Relay For Life Chairman for several years. Not comfortable with public speaking, she made an exception to spend countless hours working to educate women and men of the need for early detection of breast cancer through self-exams and mammograms.

As a breast cancer survivor, she had the honor of being selected to represent Victoria at the September 2006 “Celebration on the Hill” in Washington, DC. She along with four thousand ACS Federal Legislative Ambassadors and six thousand supporters from around the United States marched on Washington to make our leaders aware that funding for cancer research should not be decreased. In April 2007, George W. Bush signed into law that funding would be increased.

She was proud of being chosen as DeTar Volunteer of the Year in 1981. She began volunteering with Hospice of South Texas in 1988 and was selected Volunteer of the Year in 1993 and later as Hospice Volunteer of the Decade and continued to serve for 27 years. She also received the American Cancer Society Volunteer Service Award in 2001. She would be quick to tell you that she did not achieve these awards alone but through the great support of her family and friends.

She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a force to be reckoned with when it came to her passions; she cared deeply for people and her community.

Zora had requested that services not be held in her honor and for donations to be made to Hospice of South Texas, 605 E. Locust Avenue, Victoria, Texas 77901, or the American Cancer Society, 212 Gene Samford Drive, Lufkin, Texas 75904, in lieu of flowers.
