Funeral services for Wesley Hunter Gulley, 87, of Zavalla will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Johnson Missionary Baptist Church in Zavalla with Brother Jay Anderson officiating. A private burial will be held in West Oaks Cemetery in Jasper.
Hunter was born July 20, 1937 in New Willard, Texas in Polk County to the late Clara (Bell) and Alonzo Lee Gulley, and died Saturday, April 19, 2025 at his residence.
Hunter was a graduate of Chester High School and later married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Powell. In 1956 they became the proud parents of Belinda Carol, and then in 1959, Bruce Alan was born.
Hunter was a member of Johnson Missionary Baptist Church and served as a Deacon. He was the owner/operator of Gulley and Griner Barber Shop in Jasper for many years before retiring and moving to the farm in Zavalla.
Hunter loved farming, ranching and producing the best hay in this part of Texas. He took great pride in his meticulously groomed hay fields. Using the correct amount of fertilizer, checking humidity and weather forecast was always imperative before planning to state his yearly hay production.
Hunter loved sports as well. Even when he shouldn’t be driving, he would make his way to Colmesneil to watch Cooper play football. He also loved watching football on television.
Survivors include his daughter, Belinda Herring and husband Roger of Zavalla; granddaughter, Carissa Gulley Lewis and husband Bobby of Zavalla; grandson, Rhett Hunter Herring of College Station; granddaughter, Rachel Herring Anderson and husband Jay of Vidor. He was the proud great-grandfather to Cooper, Colton, and Case Lewis, and Avery, Judah, and Phoenix Anderson. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Becky Gulley of Warren; sister, Grace Turner of Huntsville; sister-in-law, Betty Gulley of Big Sandy; brother-in-law, Marion Rogers of Gilmer; and numerous other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Phyllis Gulley; his only son, Bruce Alan Gulley; and siblings, T.L., Doris, Wanda, Joe Burt, Jane, and infant brother, Bruce.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Lewis, Cooper Lewis, Rodney Turner, Claude Gulley, Chad Gulley, and Donnie Gulley.
Honorary pallbearers will be Rhett Hunter Herring, Jesse Jacks, Colton Lewis, Case Lewis, and Judah Anderson.
