Our dear mother, Virginia Dell Scaff Summers, sadly passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2024 in her home at the age of 84. She was a wonderful mother who was always there when we needed her the most, offering support, wisdom, and love in abundance.
Virginia was born June 25, 1940 in Huntington, Texas to Ferd and Estelle Barnes Scaff, also known as “Nena” and “Papa”. She married the love of her life, Guy Marion Summers on December 21, 1956. Their wedding was the first to be held in the original sanctuary on the existing campus of the Huntington First Baptist Church. The carpet was rolled down the center aisle for them.
Our mom was a beautiful and talented woman who played the piano wonderfully for personal enjoyment and as the pianist at Huntington First Baptist Church for many years, where she was also a lifetime member. She was an avid reader and had a plethora of knowledge in all subjects. Mom was an amazing seamstress, and it was evident in the creative and beautiful clothes she made for her daughters. The holidays were always her favorite with decorations inside and out, with lots of food and fellowship. Her house was the stopping place for many in the school and community for a lifetime.
Guy and Virginia built and ran Sportman’s Corner in Huntington from 1967-1972. She was later employed by the Lufkin Paper Mill until her retirement.
Virginia Scaff was a Tyler County Dogwood Duchess in 1955 for Huntington, as a legacy to the Barnes and Shepherd family heritage. So began a tradition in which six of her descendants would participate in throughout the years.
Survivors include her daughter, Bambi Shofner, granddaughter, Chelsea Shofner and great-grandsons Jasper and Jaxon, granddaughter, Chloe Shofner and Trevor Smith and great-granddaughter Harlow Smith. Daughter, Belinda Moore and husband David, granddaughter, Mackenzie Moore, granddaughter, Blair Crawford and husband Randy, great-grandson Cavan and great-granddaughters Briley, Brittany, and Shelby, grandson, Blaze Miller and wife Cassidy, great-grandsons Caddo and Sonny and great-granddaughter, Kora. Daughter, Jennifer Mills and husband Ricky, granddaughter Katie Mills and great-granddaughter Caroline, granddaughter Tori Netherton and husband Logan, great-granddaughter Emmaline and great-grandson Ezra.; along with numerous other relatives and friends and her dog Billie and cat, Kitty-Kitty.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Guy Summers; brother, Earl Scaff; mother-in-law, Elsie Nerren Summers; and her beloved dog, Coco.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Mills, David Moore, Blaze Miller, Randy Crawford, Logan Netherton, and Trevor Smith.
