A celebration of life for Van Bush, 70, of Huntington will be held Sunday, June 14, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin. A reception will follow in the Carroway Family Reception Room. Arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.
Van was born May 22, 1956 in Pasadena, Texas to the late Barbara Mericle Selman, and Gene Bush who passed away early in his childhood. He was raised by his mother, and his step-dad Charles "Charlie" Selman. Van passed away Tuesday evening, June 9, 2026.
Van resided in Huntington and served for over 3 decades as the Director of 911 at DETCOG, where he made lifelong friends. Nothing mattered more to him than his family, his beloved dogs, his friends, and his favorite sports teams. His happiest hours were spent with his wife, Laura, whether in their favorite recliners at home, surrounded by their pack of dogs watching the big game, or traveling to casinos to try their luck. He loved sports of all kinds, but the SFA Ladyjacks Basketball teams of the 90s and the Dallas Cowboys had a special place. From the horse races, to the first WNBA championship game, to NCAA regionals, to Astros or Rangers games, he created many lifelong memories with his son Brandan. He took just as much pride in introducing his daughter Katie to basketball and softball, teaching her the ins and outs of the games. He absolutely loved fantasy sports, spending hours with friends, and later in life playing online. Van had the best sense of humor, with the wisest jokes and a delivery all his own, a gift he shared often with his son and his friends. He was a member of the Lions Club, an avid lover of Tex-Mex food, and a safe haven for every dog that found him. He never turned down a Dr Pepper or a Reese's cup, which he swore tasted better when Katie paid for them. But his favorite thing to be was G-Daddy to his granddaughters, Avery and Emmy.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Bush of Huntington; son, Brandan Bush and wife Mandi of Little Elm; daughter, Katie Sattaur and husband Ecliffe of Austin; grandchildren, Avery and Emmy Bush of Little Elm; sister, Sheri Holcomb and husband Joe of Lufkin; nieces, Morgan Holcomb of Lufkin, and Shelby Whiteaker and husband Darl of Bullard; great nephew, Corbin Whiteaker, and great niece, McKenzie Whiteaker, of Bullard; beloved pets, Lucy and Daisy; and numerous other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Bush; his mother, Barbara Selman; his step-dad, Charles "Charlie" Selman; and beloved dogs, Maxwell, Ziggy, and Trace.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Winnie Berry Humane Society of Angelina County, 1102 N. John Redditt Drive, Lufkin, Texas 75904.
The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. David Duke for his care, and all the family and friends who have reached out and shown their love and support.
