Graveside services for Sy Mitchell Mayes, 67, of Lufkin will be held Friday, January 9, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park with Pastor Kay Rose officiating.
Mr. Mayes was born December 30, 1958 in Lufkin, Texas to the late Elizabeth (Toney) and C.M. Mayes, and died Sunday, January 4, 2026 in his residence.
Sy Mitchell was a devoted father, loyal friend, and lifelong Lufkin native who left a lasting mark on everyone he met. A standout baseball player throughout high school, Sy earned an athletic scholarship to Texas Wesleyan University, where he proudly continued his love for the game.
Above all, Sy’s greatest joy was his daughter, Sara. He was her biggest fan — especially on the softball field. A devoted sports fan, Sy loved baseball, football, and college football Saturdays, with Texas games being strictly non-interruptible. You knew not to call while Texas was on. When he wasn’t watching a game, he could be found mowing yards or enjoying a good pack of cookies.
Known for his tough love, big heart, and countless friendships, Sy had a way of making everyone feel like family. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for his loyalty, humor, and the deep love he had for his people especially his daughter.
Survivors include his daughter, Sara Mayes of Lufkin.
Pallbearers will be Chad Hooper, Tommy Stovall, Wayne Ross, Drew Stovall, Cody Wilde, Logan Wilde, and Scott Ridley.
Honorary pallbearer will be Loye Martin.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Carroway Funeral Home.
