Sue Dene Perkins

Funeral services for Sue Dene Perkins, 72, of Lufkin will be held Sunday, October 21, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Terry Hodges officiating. Interment will follow in the Wheeler Cemetery in Wakefield, Texas.

Ms. Perkins was born January 12, 1946 in Wichita Falls, Texas to the late Darrye and Marie (Hall) Perkins, and passed away Thursday, October 18, 2018 following complications from surgery.

Ms. Perkins had recently moved from Electra, Texas to Lufkin. She graduated from Electra High School in 1964. She then graduated from North Texas State University, where she was editor of the award-winning Yucca yearbook. She completed her student teaching at Arlington Sam Houston High School, under the leadership of then first-year teacher Lina Davis. After she received her Bachelor’s in English from NTSU, she pursued a career in journalism. She served as editor of both the Arlington Daily News and the Texas Manufacturers Association trade magazine along with numerous other publications. She spent some early years in New York City, working for various magazines. She received her Master’s in Journalism from Stephen F. Austin State University and went on to teach communications courses at Texas A&M University.

Sue’s passion was teaching how to produce a yearbook to high school students. She taught 13 years at Diboll High School followed by two years at Corrigan-Camden High School, where she retired in 2001.

Survivors include her aunt, Barbara Adkison of Alvin; and cousins, Linda Perkins Parrish and husband Harlon of Corrigan, Carl Perkins of Tuttle, Oklahoma, Jerry and Kathy Perkins of Atoka, Oklahoma, Doyle Crager of Jermyn, David and Lisa Crager, Corry and Sandy Crager, all of Diboll, Dorry and Cindy Crager of Jermyn, Dennis Crager of Ocilla, Georgia, Richard and Sherry Crager of Nacogdoches, Lorraine Devillier of Spring, Betty and Merle Vollman of Pearland, Bernice and David Trammell of Granbury, Patsy and Steve Quimby of Sugar Land, Carrye (Mickey) Perkins, Claudia Perkins, and Carl Perkins all of Arlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Joe Lynn Perkins.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon prior to the services.
