Steve Chandler

July 27, 1955 — January 16, 2021

Funeral services for Steve Chandler, 65, of Lufkin will be held Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Denman Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. Jacob Fitzgerald, Brother Ron Meadows, and Matt Chandler officiating. Interment will follow in the Arnold Cemetery in the Forest Community of Cherokee County.

Steve was born July 27, 1955 in Rusk, Texas to Sue (Wisener) Harris and the late Leonard Chandler, and passed away at home Saturday, January 16, 2021 surrounded by his loving family.

Steve was an Outside Service Technician employed at Lufkin Telephone Exchange, retiring after 37 years of service. After retiring from the phone company, he owned and operated his own sawmill, Chandler Mill. Steve was a strong Christian man serving as Deacon, Music Leader, and RA Director for many years. He was most proud of his work in RA’s, carrying many boys to camp at Pineywoods Baptist Encampment from 1984 until 2014, the last three years working during camp week as a gun instructor. He also served on the Board at Pineywoods Baptist Encampment for 15 years. He was a proud member of the Lufkin High School Panther Band, graduating in 1975. Steve was a member of Denman Avenue Baptist Church where he was a member of the orchestra and a children’s Sunday School teacher. Steve loved camping, fishing, and spending time at the camp house. Steve was a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be dearly missed by all.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Gayle Chandler of Lufkin; children and spouses, Matt and Karlee Chandler of Athens, Brooke and Revis Smith of Lufkin; grandchildren, Claire, Rielle, Errington, Lincoln, Jair, Uriah, and Lachlan; mother, Sue Harris; sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Donald Pittmon; brother and sister-in-law, Wesley and Sharon Mosley; sister-in-law, Phyllis Davis; step-siblings, Janice Crawford, Steve Mosley, Gerry Ann Larabee, Mark Harris, and Jason Harris; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father; stepmother, Ethel Chandler; stepfathers, Claudie Mosley and John Harris; and parents-in-law, Dale and Mary Madden.

Pallbearers will be Bill Bowling, Steve Powell, Kevin Jones, Butch Sapp, Joey Horton, and David Long.

Honorary pallbearers will be David Murphy, Chris Julian, Lance Dees, Glen Pickard, Wesley Mosley, Jim Havard, Doug Thompson, Ben Vaughan, Sammy Weaver, Oval Terry, Gary Boyd, Michael Teer, Marlyn Smith, Jack Dickey, the Hillcrest Royal Ambassadors, and members of the Denman Avenue Baptist Church 3 rd -6 th grade boys Sunday School class.

The family invites you to write your favorite memory about Steve and how he impacted your life to place in a basket in the foyer of the church for the family to have after the service.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at Denman Avenue Baptist Church.
