Stephen F. "Pete" Montes

Graveside services with military honors for Stephen F. “Pete” Montes, 74, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Moral Cemetery in Nacogdoches County with Father Hank Lanik officiating. A Celebration of Life will follow in the Fellowship Hall at Moral.

Stephen was born May 13, 1944 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to the late Aylene (Y’Barbo) and George Montes. He passed away at home in hospice care, surrounded by immediate family and loved ones on July 25, 2018.

Stephen served his Country in the United States Army, serving in Vietnam, 1965 through 1967. He was awarded the Vietnam Service medal with two bronze service stars, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He was employed for thirty-five years with Union Pacific (formerly Southern Pacific) and retired in 2009. Stephen was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and served in the Knights of Columbus for many years. He was a train enthusiast and loved the history of trains and taking pictures of them. He was always quick with a joke or a funny story. He loved all of his extended family and their children – they all affectionately called him “Uncle Pete.”

Survivors include his wife, Audrey Montes of Lufkin; son, Kevin Montes of Spring; son and son-in-law, Kyle Montes-Valdivia and Matthew Montes-Valdivia of Oklahoma City, OK; grandchildren, Britney Montes of Conroe and Kayley Montes of Waller; the mother of his children, Rebecca Downs of Lufkin; sisters Robbie Click of Lufkin and Glenda Hernandez of Joaquin; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Stephen was preceded in death by his brothers, Ray and Charles.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at Carroway Funeral Home in Lufkin.
