Shirley Beckham Ware, aka Sweetie Pie by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 2, 2024 in Lufkin, Texas after suffering a stroke.
Due to a flu outbreak, Shirley was born at home, in Lufkin, to Lula Mae (Myers) and Cecil A. Beckham on January 23, 1936. She was a graduate of Lufkin High School, Class of 1954, played in the band, and was a twirler for three years. After graduation, Shirley married her high school sweetheart, Charles Ware. Her first job was at Perry Brothers downtown and she retired from Lufkin Industries. By far, her favorite role was being a grandmother and great-grandmother. There wasn’t a craft she didn’t enjoy: stained glass, sewing, knitting, painting, crafting, and flower arranging to name a few, and she loved animals, plants and gardening. She was a member of various clubs and was an active volunteer in the community and in her church, First Baptist Church Lufkin.
Shirley is survived by her two daughters and their families, Sheryle and Tim Pettet, and Margaret and John Tjossem; granddaughter and husband, Heather Elledge and Andrew Wilson; grandson and wife, Metro and Jasmine Pettet; grandson, David Ware; grandson and wife, Phoenix and Erin Pettet; great-granddaughters, Margaret Wilson, and Charlotte and Shelby Ware; brother, Jack Beckham; numerous nieces and nephews; and many life-long friends. She was predeceased by her mother, father, husband, Charles, and son, Randy.
Our family would like to extend a special thank you to the compassionate nurses at Hospice in the Pines at CHI St. Luke’s for ensuring Shirley’s comfort and care during her final days. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75904.
