Shirley Saxon

Funeral services for Mrs. Shirley Saxon, age 104, are scheduled for Sunday, October 22, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Jimmy Hedges officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.

Mrs. Saxon, a resident of Lufkin, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2023 in Lufkin. She was born July 17, 1919 in Lufkin, Texas to Emil F. Schmidt and Georgia (Woodall) Schmidt.

On February 13, 1943 Shirley married Carroll Saxon. They were blessed with the birth of their only child Carolyn in 1948. They shared a long, loving marriage until Carroll’s death in 1986.

Shirley and her family were faithful members of Calvary Baptist Church for many years. She was a member of the Golden Heirs Senior Adult Ministry. She enjoyed fellowship and traveling with them.

Shirley worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Ned Barrett for many years.

At the age of 70 she welcomed her first and only granddaughter, Samantha Hudman, on February 14, 1990. From Samantha’s birth until Shirley’s death they had an enduring love for each other. Samantha married Brandon Hudman in 2014, and from that union, Shirley’s four beautiful great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly were born.

One of the last things that Carroll said to Carolyn was to “take care of Mama” which she so lovingly did through the years.

Shirley always said she was going to live to be 100 and she has surpassed that goal. She will always be known for her sense of humor, saying exactly what was on her mind.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carroll Saxon in 1986; sister, Linnie Aronstein, brother, Edmund Schmidt; several nephews and a niece.

Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Funderburk and husband Ray of Lufkin; granddaughter, Samantha and husband Brandon Hudman of Carthage; and four great-grandchildren, Kinley, Claire, and twins, Carter and Ben Hudman.

We would like to thank Pinecrest Retirement Community for the loving care they provided to her during her stay there.

Pallbearers will be Carl Wallace, Glenn Wallace, Bill Stewart, Tim Stewart, Brandon Hudman, Dale Childress, Trey Ainsworth, and Carlton Hudman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Troy Nash, Joe Simmons, Andy Johnson, and Smokey Davidson.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon prior to the services.
