Shirley Ann Cates, 85, of Lufkin died Sunday, June 25, 2023 at her residence. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.

Mrs. Cates was born February 3, 1938 in Lufkin, Texas to the late Maxie (Murphey) and Hiram Fletcher Broomfield. She was a lifetime resident of Lufkin.

Mrs. Cates graduated as Valedictorian from Redland High School, Class of 1956. She taught Sunday school at Clawson Baptist Church (now Grace Baptist) and also at Memorial Baptist Church for several years. She was a current member of Carpenter’s Way Baptist Church. Mrs. Cates was a past board member for Christian Information Service Center.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Bobby Cates of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Mickey and Gayle Cates of Nashville, Tennessee; son, Ricky Cates of Lufkin; grandsons, Matthew Cates-Smith and wife Sarah and Aaron Cates, all of Nashville, Tennessee; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Francis and Carl Ray Heaton of Pollok; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Beverly Annette Cates; and brothers, Edwin Broomfield and Roy Lee Broomfield.
