Graveside services for Sereta Thornton, 71, of Palestine, formerly of Lufkin, will be held Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the Jonesville Cemetery with Harold Hancock and Clay Thornton officiating.
Mrs. Thornton was born December 13, 1949 in Palestine, Texas to the late Addie (Lamb) and Alton Samuel Pheonix, and died Wednesday, November 10, 2021 in Palestine.
A longtime resident of Lufkin, Mrs. Thornton had lived in Palestine for one year. She attended Central ISD from Kindergarten through half of her senior year; her family then moved to Houston where she graduated from Aldine Sr. High in 1968. She attended Massey Business College where she learned bookkeeping. She was the bookkeeper for Thornton and Son Logging for many years.
Mrs. Thornton was a homemaker and a great cook. She also enjoyed painting and reading. While in Lufkin she was a member of Timberland Drive Church of Christ.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Blake and Candi Thornton of Lufkin, Clay and Mandy Thornton of Palestine; daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Ryan Watson of Lufkin; grandchildren, Caly Nolen and husband John of La Porte, Ethan Thornton of Lufkin, Abby Thornton of Frisco, Cooper Thornton, Brynn Watson, Danica Watson, Corrynn Watson, Annalise Watson, Emmalynn Watson, all of Lufkin; Aleeya Grayson, Kelsey Grayson, and Jules Grayson, all of Palestine; sister, Teresa Pheonix Neal of Chandler; sister-in-law, Shelia Boyett of Houston; and numerous other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 49 years, Gary Thornton; parents-in-law, Bernard and Iva Nell Thornton; and brother-in-law, Ernest Boyett.
The family extends special thanks for their loving care of Mrs. Thornton to Kaylea McCauley, Kelly Halbert, Cindi Johnson, and the employees at Brookdale Assisted Living, along with special friends Ada Ann Sandeford and the late Robert Sandeford and Anita Mae Lamb.
