Funeral services for Sarah Jane Colwell, 90, of Huntington will be held Monday, March 16, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Huntington with her son, Brother Jackson Colwell, officiating. Interment will follow in Jonesville Cemetery.
Mrs. Colwell was born September 22, 1935 in Huntington, Texas to the late Rossi B. (Boone) and H.N. Truett, Jr., and died Friday, March 13, 2026 in a local nursing home.
Mrs. Colwell was a lifetime resident of Huntington. She worked for more than 20 years in the deli at Brookshire Brothers before retiring, a job where her warm personality and strong work ethic were well known. Earlier in life, she worked alongside her beloved husband, whom she and her children lovingly called “Daddy”, helping run his small store in Zavalla near the lake until they moved back to Huntington in 1972. During those years she also sold real estate at the lake, staying busy while helping support their growing family.
She was a wonderful cook who delighted in sharing both her food and her knowledge. She especially loved teaching her grandchildren the little things that made a house feel like home - how to make dumplings, bake cookies, or crochet something with their own hands. Those moments in the kitchen and around the table became lasting memories for the family she loved so deeply.
Mrs. Colwell was a woman whose life was rooted in family, faith, and the joy of bringing people together. Known affectionately to nearly everyone as “Granny”, she carried that title with pride. Whether family, friends, or even the friends of her grandchildren, anyone who knew her quickly found themselves calling her by that same loving name.
She had a gift for hospitality and loved gathering people together, often organizing family reunions and hosting celebrations that filled her home with laughter and conversation. Though it sometimes took great effort, she never hesitated to bring her loved ones together. Her faith was an important part of her life as well. She was a member of Harmony Odell Missionary Baptist Church for over 10 years, and before that attended First Baptist Church in Zavalla and later Huntington.
Mrs. Colwell’s love for her family, her generous spirit, and the warmth she showed to everyone around her will be remembered and cherished always.
Survivors include her children and spouses, Jackson and Charlette Colwell, Bennilynn and Randy Colbert, Julie and Tim Kay, and Brad and T.J. Colwell, all of Huntington; grandchildren and spouses, Paul Colwell, Kristin and Sam Williams, Manda and Ricky Page, David and Christie Flowers, Kassi Kay, Kelsi Kay, Clay and Brooke Colwell, Cole Colwell, Corey and Takako Colbert all of Huntington, Jami Kay of Austin, Kimberlee and Joey Solis of Diboll, and Brad and Rhinnon Colbert of Central; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Virginia Truett of Alabama, and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Euel Colwell; grandson, B.J. Flowers; daughter-in-law, Linda Colwell; brothers, Kenneth Truett and Ronnie Truett; and sister, Peggy Rice.
