Robert Lee "Umpa" Stringer

July 12, 1940 — September 1, 2021

Services to celebrate the life of Robert Lee “Umpa” Stringer will be held Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Huntington with Brother Kenneth Burch officiating.

Our beloved Robert Lee “Umpa” Stringer passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2021 in Lufkin, Texas. He was born July 12, 1940 in Brookhaven, Mississippi to the late Flavil Hall Stringer and Ella Victoria (Bowman) Stringer. The family relocated to Vidor, Texas where he attended school and lived until 1969. In 1969 he moved to Houston and in 1985 he moved to East Texas to be closer to his grandchildren and remained in East Texas until his passing.

Robert was a faithful member of the Nacogdoches Church of Christ. He was known by his distinctive voice (no one’s voice compared to his).

When he wasn’t watching westerns or college football on television he would be spending time with his many friends or his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His loved ones will remember he “was such a good man with not a bad bone in his body”. He was a very social soul and enjoying friends company made him very happy! Umpa was affectionally known as a “master agitator”.

Robert is survived by his daughters, Rebecca “Becky” Burch and husband Jerry of Lufkin and Lisa Pope of Nacogdoches; brother, Donald Stringer and wife Betty Lee of Denton; sister, Geraldine Chesser and husband Don of Beaumont. He also leaves behind 4 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Michael Stringer.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon prior to the services.
