Robert Giles Johnston, known to family and friends as “Bob,” passed away in Lufkin, Texas on February 3, 2018, at the age of 75 years. Bob was born in Houston, Texas on September 20, 1942 and graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School and the University of Houston. He served in the United States Navy and worked for many years as an auditor with the State of Texas. A talented photographer and gardener, he had a great eye for finding beauty in nature. Bob loved and nurtured all sorts of animals from a young age and was a devoted dog owner throughout his life. He trained numerous German Shepherds and took many to the AKC show ring. He exercised enormous patience, understanding and humor in his work and play with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mae Perkins Johnston and Glen Lee Johnston and brother-in-law, the Reverend Perry Dean Richardson. He is survived by his daughter, Heather Britt Hudkins of Sugar Land, Texas; sisters Maryanna (Eugene) Rhemann of Spring, Texas and Glenda Sue (David) Cummings of Columbia, Maryland; nephew James Giles Richardson of Durham, North Carolina; nieces Diana Cummings (Jeremy) Simon of Bethesda, Maryland and Susan Richardson (John) Barnes of Houston, Texas; great nephews Matthew and Jason Simon of Bethesda; and numerous loyal friends. A memorial service will be held at Lufkin First United Methodist Church (805 E Denman Ave.) in the Henderson Chapel on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at 11 am with reception immediately following.
