Memorial services for Richard Thompson, 85, of Lufkin will be held Thursday, October 25, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church Lufkin with Reverend Mark A. Newton officiating. A private family burial will be held in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mr. Thompson was born May 18, 1933 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to the late Hilda (Grantham) and Harry Alexander Thompson, and died Tuesday, October 23, 2018 in a local facility.
Mr. Thompson had resided in Lufkin for more than 66 years. He graduated from Lamar University and was Co-Owner and Operator of Thomas & Thompson, a commercial construction business, for 22 years. He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America, serving on the East Texas Area Council Board of Directors, and received the Silver Beaver Award. He served on the Salvation Army Board of Directors, Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, East Texas Baptist University Board of Regents for eight years, was a past President and Lt. Governor of The Kiwanis Club of Lufkin, Lufkin City Commissioner, and served on the Lufkin Planning and Zoning Committee. He was the Founder of Angelina National Bank. Mr. Thompson was a member of First Baptist Church Lufkin, serving as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, on numerous committees, and was a volunteer with the Christian Builder’s Association traveling throughout the United States.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Billie Courtney Thompson of Lufkin; daughter, Shirley Parker and husband Brent of Huntington; son, Norman Thompson and wife Mary Ann of Tyler; grandchildren, Melody Thomason and husband Michael of Lufkin, Leigh Ann Thompson of Dallas, Travis Parker of Huntington, Kellie Tice and husband Daniel of Katy, Austin Parker of Huntington, and James Thompson of Seattle, Washington; great-grandchildren, Parker Thomason and Preston Thomason of Lufkin, and Annabelle Tice of Katy; sister, Marion Montgomery and husband Bob of Meadow Lake; brother, Douglas Thompson of San Marcos, California; sister-in-law, Jo Marie Jones and husband Charles of Jasper; brother-in-law, Marvin Aiken of Coldspring; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Betty Aiken.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of First Baptist Church Lufkin.
