Come join family and friends for a memorial service celebrating the life of Peggy Sue Pounders, 82, of Corrigan. Services will be held Saturday, June 15, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin with Pastor Jeremy Yancey of Timber Creek Church officiating.
Peggy was born January 30, 1937 in San Antonio, Texas to the late Gay (Rapp) and Ernest B. Chandler, and passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2019 after a long battle with lung cancer.
Peggy was born in San Antonio, Texas but spent the majority of her younger years in Seabrook, Texas. After graduating from Clear Creek High School in 1955 and being crowned Miss South Texas and runner-up to Miss Texas, Peggy embarked on a career as a professional dancer that would allow her to travel the world. As an accomplished dancer, Peggy spent years on Broadway performing with such stars as Nat King Cole, Paul Anka, Tony Bennett, Jerry Lewis, Rhonda Fleming, and many others. She was even asked to do a “command performance” for the Queen of England and the Shah of Persia. During her career she appeared on major television shows such as the Ed Sullivan Show, The Jackie Gleason Show, and on the BBC in London. After marrying the love of her life, Marvin, in the early 1960s, Peggy returned to Seabrook, Texas where she opened a dance studio “Le Chateau de Ballet”. It was there where she taught thousands of children tap, ballet, jazz, and acrobatics, and adults ballroom dancing.
After retiring from dance, Peggy focused on her family while helping her husband with his career in hospitality management.
Peggy will be remembered for her kindness, her spunk, and determination. Her love for her children and grandchildren was immeasurable. She will also be remembered for her compassion for animals - she was always quick to stop and offer help to animals in need and volunteer her time with local animal rescue groups.
She is survived by her children, Michael Pounders and daughter-in-law Michelle; daughter, Yana Ogletree and son-in-law Clark; and daughter, Macy “Cissy” Supernaw and son-in-law Doug. Additionally, Peggy leaves behind her grandchildren, Hunter Bullock, Chandler Pounders, Cannon Bullock, Kerrigan Pounders, Suzonna McFarlain, Lee Allen, Michael Allen, Randall Allen, Ciara Allen, Robert Ogletree and Rebecca Ogletree. She also is survived by numerous great-grandchildren and nephews, Mickey Boykin and Richard Alberigo of Houston.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Marvin Pounders; her parents, Ernest and Gay Chandler of Corrigan; and her sister, Betty Jo Alberigo of Florida.
Honorary pallbearers are Donnie Harris, Robbie Harris, Chris Bailey, John F. Clifton, and Greg Nobles.
Special memorials can be made to the Winnie Berry Humane Society, P.O. Box 472, Lufkin, Texas 75902.
