Funeral services for Odell “Momma Dell” Plummer, 100, of Lufkin will be held Friday, March 29, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend David Hunt and Reverend Justin Bullard officiating. Interment will follow in Largent Cemetery.
Ms. Plummer was born March 3, 1924 in Deadwood, Texas to the late Hattie (LaGrone) and Cole Cross Ray, and passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at her daughter’s home, where she had resided for the last three years.
Ms. Plummer was the first female firefighter in Angelina County and had served as Company Guard at the Salvation Army. She worked at The Lufkin Daily News for 10 years and was the landscaper for more than 20 years in the Crown Colony Subdivision. Ms. Plummer was an ordained minister and Sunday school teacher and married many great-grandchildren and local community members.
Ms. Plummer enjoyed the outdoors and loved playing cards and dominos with anyone who was brave enough to “try” to beat her. She crocheted all her life and made many outfits and accessories for her family and friends. Her family and friends were her pride and joy. You could see her eyes light up before they made it through the door. She was very active in her local community and church. She enjoyed reading the Word of God and singing songs from her book of hymns. She also loved singing “Oh Baby” to many children through the years.
Survivors include her daughter, Marjorie Seaman of Lufkin; granddaughters, Brenda Letney and husband Gary, Donna Bennefield, Beverly Arnold, all of Lufkin, and Kimberly Armstrong Booker of Austin; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Bobby Joe Armstrong; son-in-law, Raymond Seaman; brothers, J.C. Ray, Arthur “Preacher” Ray, and Leonard “Ed” Ray; sister, Trula “Fae” Love; and Johnny Armstrong, who she loved and raised as her own son.
Pallbearers will be AJ Bennefield, Ross Bonham, Elijah Booker, Tanner Booker, David Davlin, Marshall Inman, Lamar Nerren, Allen Nesbett, G. Wayne Price, R. Wayne Price, and Ryan Rodriguez.
Honorary pallbearer will be Larry Booker, currently serving active duty in the U.S. Navy.
