Nancy Virginia Carter, 90, of Lufkin died, Friday, May 3, 2019. She was born March 29, 1929 to the late William N. and Edmona (Lovett) Dabney.
Born in Electra, Texas, she and her family later moved to Houston. Upon her graduation from Reagan High School, she received the American Legion Award which recognized character, courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship, and service, all of which were traits she demonstrated throughout her life. Mrs. Carter had a beautiful singing voice and participated in school choral groups. She was active in multiple other extracurricular activities and was named Most Beautiful Girl her senior year.
Mrs. Carter graduated from Reagan in May 1947, and in August 1947 she married Tilmon J. Carter, her high school sweetheart, who had returned home at the end of World War II. Three children were born to their marriage. After all of the children were in school, she enrolled in college and earned Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees in elementary education. She taught in elementary schools in Liberty ISD, Spring ISD, and Lamar Consolidated ISD for 25 years. Mrs. Carter was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
Mrs. Carter and her husband were active members of the Church of Christ in Houston, Liberty, Rosenberg, and Lufkin. She was physically beautiful but more importantly, she had a beautiful spirit that exemplified everything a Christian should be.
She is survived by her children, Dr. J. Dan Carter and wife Barbara, W. Don Carter, and Carolyn Bell and husband Mike; grandchildren, Jennifer Deaton and husband Ryan, Dr. Jason Carter and wife Nicole, Dr. Adam Carter, Celeste Blackburn and husband Kelly, Matt Carter and wife Melissa, Terrell James and husband Bryan; Dana Hughes and husband Sam, Cody Carter, Chris Bell and wife Katrina, and Kate Loverin and husband Cody; great-grandchildren, Caroline Deaton, Charlie Deaton, Charlotte Deaton, Claire Carter, Lila Carter, Anna Carter, Cade Blackburn, Hollan Blackburn, Meghan Carter, Natalie Carter, Coraline James, Kaiden Bell, Christian Bell, Allison Loverin, Carter Loverin, and Katherine Ruth Loverin; sister, Anna Hennessy; nephew, David Dabney; and niece, Erin Passmonick.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Tilmon J. Carter; parents, William N. Dabney and Edmona Dabney; and brother, Robert “Bob” Dabney.
Pallbearers will be Jason Carter, Adam Carter, Matt Carter, Cody Carter, Chris Bell, and Ryan Deaton.
For the last three years Mrs. Carter was blessed to have the assistance of very special caregivers: Shirley Hunt, La’Manda Hunt, Tierra Hunt, and Beulah Williams, all who were incredibly devoted to her and gave her extraordinary, loving care.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. David W. Glenn, MD and Dr. Sean Moran, MD for the exceptional care they gave her over the years, and to Guesna Dixon for the special treatment she gave her.
