Mildred Looser Brumble

May 29, 1916 — January 30, 2019

Funeral services for Mildred Looser Brumble, 102, of Houston, formerly of Lufkin, will be held Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in the Elwyn M. Gipson Memorial Chapel at the Garden of Memories Memorial Park with Pastor Mark Newton officiating. Interment will be held immediately following the services.

Mildred Looser Brumble passed away on January 30, 2019 in the home of her son Don in Houston. “Mull,” as she was affectionately known, was born May 29, 1916 in Enfield, Illinois, the daughter of Otis and Gertie Garrison Wageneck. She spent her childhood years in E. St. Louis and graduated from high school there. She married her high school sweetheart Bill Looser in 1936. In February 1939, Bill and Millie moved to Lufkin with a small group of founders for the establishment of the Texas Foundries, and in June their son Don was born. Millie resided in Lufkin from 1939 to 2016 when she moved to Houston to live with her son and daughter-in-law.

Millie loved children, nature, Christmas, and tomatoes. When she and Bill joined the First Baptist Church of Lufkin in 1939, she began many years of working with babies in the Cradle Roll Department. In later years, she taught middle school girls in Sunday School and was a member of the church choir with Bill. In 1971, Bill passed away unexpectedly at the age of 56. Shortly after his death, Millie began as a volunteer each week at the State Hospital in Rusk. Later, she also became a member of the Memorial Medical Center Auxiliary volunteers and was recognized at age 95 as the oldest volunteer with a photo and article in the Lufkin Daily News for her 4,000 hours of service to the Auxiliary over 30 years.

She was an active member of the Cut N’ Grow Garden Club of Lufkin and loved annual fall pilgrimages to view the fall colors across the nation.  From her love of nature, Millie began painting in her 60s. Her oils of landscapes remained one of her most rewarding tangible achievements throughout the rest of her life. Another great reward was the opportunity to travel to Europe in her 70s and come to know both her Wageneck and Looser cousins in Germany.

In 1980, Millie married her former neighbor and long-time friend E. O. Brumble, Jr. Theirs was a happy and rewarding marriage for some 16 years until his death in 1996. Indefatigable, Millie at age 90 was still driving to Houston to see her family. At 95, she moved to Pinecrest Retirement Community where she soon found many long-time friends and met many new ones. She continued as a member of the Amity Sunday School class of the First Baptist Church. In 2016, Pinecrest was the setting for her 100 th birthday party for many friends and family.

Millie is survived by her son, Don Looser and his wife Elsa Jean of Houston; a grandson, Greg Looser and his wife Beth of Houston; and two great-granddaughters, Brock and Avery Looser of Houston. She was generously supported by her brother’s children, Barbara Gardner, Peg Patton, Suzanne and Bill Wageneck, Carolyn and Bob Wageneck, and Dora and Gene Wageneck. Additionally, she is survived by her loving step-grandchildren, Stacey and Dale Bourgeois, Ronnie and Blanca Brumble, and Bob and Eva Brumble.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 35 years, Bill Looser; and husband of 16 years, E. O. Brumble, Jr.

Millie’s family would like to express their gratitude for the friendship, support, and care of her by so many friends over these many years. Loving care has been provided in Houston by Mrs. Beryl Simon, Dr. Richard Pohil, and Mr. Robert Rossi.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Lufkin, 106 E. Bremond Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75901 or to the charity of one’s choice.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Monday evening at Carroway Funeral Home.
