Memorial services for Melvin Iven Smith, 68, of Lufkin will be held Thursday, March 8, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Carroway Funeral Home with his brother, Barry Smith presiding. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.
Mel was born September 9, 1949, in Lufkin, Texas to the late Jessie (Dunn) and L.B. “Jiggs” Smith, and died Saturday, March 3, 2018, in a local hospice facility.
Mel graduated from Hudson High School and attained a business degree from Stephen F. Austin as well as formal education in the insurance field. His career spanned many years in the insurance industry, culminating with his retirement from the State Board of Insurance five years ago in Austin, at which time he moved back to Lufkin. He loved animals, particularly dogs. He spent his retirement days reading, watching television and keeping up with current events. He was a lifelong fan of the Texas Longhorns sports programs.
Survivors include his sister, Sharon Bruce and husband Victor of Lufkin; brother, Barry Smith and wife Lisbeth of Houston; four nieces and nephews; and four great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
