Melva Ruth Mcclendon

Funeral services for Melva Ruth McClendon, 80, of Lufkin will be held Friday, September 14, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Dwayne Thornton and Brother Seth Bowman officiating. Interment will follow in the Old Union Cemetery.

Ms. McClendon was born December 31, 1937 in Lufkin, Texas to the late Ruth (Murray) and Louie Burkett, and died Monday, September 10, 2018 in a local hospice facility.

Ms. McClendon was a lifelong resident of Lufkin. She enjoyed working at Charlie’s, where she worked for over 30 years. She thoroughly enjoyed all social activities, such as playing bingo, attending church events and visiting with her friends and family. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW and Hillcrest Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Brookshire and husband Claude and Sandra Ortiz and husband Roy, all of Lufkin; grandchildren, Joshua Smithheart and wife Jody of Spring, Lisa Murphy and husband Sean of Pearland, Lance Ortiz and wife D’Ann of Lufkin, and Blake Ortiz and wife Caylan of Seabrook; great-grandchildren, Bailey, Drew, Issac, Austin, Craig, Aiden, and Jude; sister, Shirley Wilson of Clute; brother Mike Burkett and wife Darla of Spring; sister-in-law, Rosemary Burkett of Lufkin; “adopted” daughter, Regina Jordan of Lufkin; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Jerry Burkett and Donald Burkett; and sister, Betty Berry.

Pallbearers will be Mike Burkett, Mike Burkett, Jr., Sean Murphy, Wade Jabour, Jr., Kevin Marshall, and Johnny Austin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Wade Jabour, Sr. and Marlyn Smith.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church, 2005 Ford Chapel Road, Lufkin, Texas 75901 or Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75904.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
