Funeral services for Maxine Bishop, 93, of Lufkin will be held Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Steve Cowart officiating. Interment will follow in the Gann Cemetery.

Mrs. Bishop was born August 1, 1930 in Missouri to the late Neva (Taylor) and Arthur Wood, and died Sunday, December 3, 2023 in a local facility.

Maxine lived in Lufkin most of her life and owned and operated Bishops Propane and Tarrant Grocery Store. She was strong and hardworking, providing a loving home for her daughters. The girls remember her as kind, nurturing, happy and “the best mother ever”. They say she loved unconditionally and “loved like Jesus”! She was a bright light in this world and will be missed dearly.

Survivors include her daughters, Shelia Unsell Wells and husband Ricky of Lufkin, Bennie Unsell Kessler of Appleby; grandson, Michael Bowden and wife Kellie; granddaughters, Amie Jones McCullough and husband Drew, Taylor Guitterez and husband Fernando, Courtney Wells and father of her children Ben Nash; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Clayton McClendon of Lufkin; and numerous other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Billy Bishop; husband and father of her children, Charley Unsell; one sister and four brothers.

Pallbearers will be Michael Bowden, Christian Bowden, Fernando Guitterez, Jason Unsell, Jeremy Unsell, Dakota Unsell, and Dale Hill.

Honorary pallbearers will be Syd Johnson and Trey Stanford.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday morning prior to the service.
