Mary Jo (Joseph) Taylor

Funeral services for Mary Jo (Joseph) Taylor, 83, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Mark A. Newton officiating. Interment will follow in the Simpson Cemetery in Pollok.

Mary Jo was born July 1, 1941 in Pollok, Texas to the late Effie Edna (Choate) Joseph and Austin Carol Joseph, and departed this life on Monday, August 12, 2024.

Mary Jo graduated from Central High School, Class of 1959. She first worked at First State Bank and Trust and then began her career with Texas Power & Light in 1962. She worked for Texas Power & Light and its’ succeeding companies TU/TXU Electric for the next 37 years, retiring in 1999.

Mary Jo served on the Lufkin Main Street Board and served as a HOSTS reading mentor at Brandon Elementary School from 1997 to 2018. She was a member of the Geneva Sunday School class at Lufkin’s First Baptist Church, where she also served on the money counting committee.

Known to her four grandchildren and their friends as “Jo Jo”, she lovingly attended all of their sports, dance and school activities.

Survivors include her loving family of sons and daughters-in-law, Lindsay and Garion Taylor, Randall and Cinda Taylor, all of Lufkin; grandchildren, Zach Taylor and wife Gemma Sookprasong of Arlington, Jay Taylor of Austin, Wes Taylor and wife Sarah of Lufkin, Mollie Meagher and husband Matt of New York, New York; great-granddaughter, Keely Corinne Taylor; sisters-in-law, Sue Joseph and Janet Taylor; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her recently deceased husband of 64 years, Robert Lindsay “Butch” Taylor; her parents; brothers, A.C. Luce, Tom W. Luce, Jack Luce, and Edward Joseph, Sr.; and sister, Effie Gertrude Joseph.

Pallbearers will be Zach Taylor, Wes Taylor, Jay Taylor, Matt Meagher, Leslie Joseph, Richard Joseph, Adrian Neal, and Robert Luce.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Brown, John Bonner, Tommy Luce, and Lee Slaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Lufkin Building Fund, 106 E. Bremond Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75901 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, Houston and SE Texas Chapter, 6055 South Loop E., Houston, Texas 77087.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
