Funeral services for Lee Alvis Songue, 84, of Lufkin will be held Monday, February 26, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Clawson Assembly of God with Pastor Kevin Poage and Pastor Josh Poage officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery in Groveton.
Mr. Songue was born March 19, 1933 in Tioga, Louisiana to the late Mary Gertrude (Johnson) and Arthur D. Songne, and died Friday, February 23, 2018 in a local hospital.
Mr. Songue had resided in Lufkin for 20 years. He served in the Louisiana National Guard, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Army, then retired from Houston Pipefitters Local 211 following 50 years of service as a welder and pipefitter. Mr. Songue was known for his hard work that included construction of the first centrifuge at NASA. He was very talented and was known for his metal art. Mr. Songue enjoyed working in his yard, and he kept it immaculately clean. He loved gumbo and coffee. He was a generous man and would have given anyone the shirt off his back. Mr. Songue attended Clawson Assembly of God.
Survivors include his wife, LaVerne Songue of Lufkin; daughters and son-in-law, Janet and Louis Wayne Snyder of Lufkin and Sharon Statham of Hudson; sons, Randy Songue and Mark Songue, both of Lufkin; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Essie Ballard of Hulbert, Oklahoma; sisters-in-law, Wilma Roberts of Mena, Arkansas and Doris Samford of Nacogdoches; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Phillip and Betty Gersbach of Groveton; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Ellen Conn; and parents-in-law, Rudolf and Bertha Gersbach.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at Carroway Funeral Home.
