Memorial services for Kenneth Ray Johnson, 71, of Lufkin will be held Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at First Christian Church. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.
Ken was born September 4, 1947 in Beaumont, Texas to the late Inez (Harris) and G.C. Johnson, Jr., and died Monday, October 15, 2018 in a local nursing home.
Ken was born in Beaumont and moved to Jasper in the seventh grade. He and Jane started dating in the eighth grade. They have been married for 48 years and together for a total of 56 years. He was a standout and co-captain of the football team and an outstanding baseball player throughout high school. After high school he attended Sam Houston State University for one semester. He missed Jane so much that he transferred to Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches where she was attending. He majored in Kinesiology and after graduation he took many forestry courses.
His first job was with Temple Inland which took him and Jane to North Carolina and Dallas before moving to Lufkin, where he spent the remaining years of his life. Although he traveled a lot for work, every minute he was home he spent hunting and fishing with his sons at Eason Lake, watching them play soccer, or traveling with Jane. He loved mowing and spending time at his farm, Biloxi Creek. He never missed any of Ryder’s baseball tournaments and loved to spend time with Fletcher and Warner every chance he could.
Ken worked extremely hard to provide the very best of everything for his family. Family vacations were always great adventures. He enjoyed helping others and rarely did anything solely for himself.
Ken loved reuniting with his childhood friends, of which there were many, from Jasper. He was a highly respected and fun-loving man.
Most importantly he was a wonderful and loving husband, the best father and grandfather we could have asked for, and he will be missed every day. Ken went by many nicknames including Chief, Kejo, Kenny Ray, Silver Fox and Kenny, but to him the most important was DAD.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Jane Adams Johnson of Lufkin; sons, Hunter Johnson and wife Keri and Ramsey Johnson and wife, Karen; grandsons, Ryder, Fletcher, Warner, Knox and Tanner; and brother, Jimmy Johnson and wife Sharon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandchildren, Marly Jane Johnson and Miller Boone Johnson.
A reception honoring Ken will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. following the service at Crown Colony Country Club.
