Kenneth Warren Akers, 86, of Lufkin died Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at his residence. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home and services will be held at a later date.

Mr. Akers was born November 6, 1938 in Wyandotte, Michigan to the late Willa Mae (Laster) and Roy Kenneth Akers.

Kenneth graduated from LaSalle High School in Niagara Falls, New York in June of 1956, and joined the U.S. Air Force in August of that same year. He and his beloved Mable Frances Mathews married on February 28, 1959 in Nacogdoches, Texas. His military service included stints in Lufkin, Texas, Houston, Texas, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Minot, North Dakota, Ontario, Canada and Manitoba, Canada. Shortly after he was honorably discharged in 1964, they moved back to Niagara Falls and as Ken told it: “We was po’. Didn’t have a pot to piss in, and besides, it was too cold to pee.” After working for Coca-Cola, GM Forge Plant and Arkansas Power & Light, he went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an Air Traffic Controller in Houston until his transfer to Lufkin in August of 1968. He retired from the FAA on December 31, 1989, and joined the National Weather Service 15 days later. Hobbies included fishing, telling jokes and bowling, including bowling a perfect game on March 13, 1996.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Margaret Akers; daughter and son-in-law, Traci and Dave Dennis; grandsons and their wives, Chris and Ashley Akers, Cory and Cecilie Akers; great-grandchildren, Riot Akers, Owen Arnold, Payson Arnold, Rachel Boone; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mable F. (Mathews) Akers; grandson, Matthew Akers; and sister, Sally Mae Scott.

Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Akers, Chris Akers, Cory Akers, Owen Arnold, Riot Akers and Dave Dennis.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
