Kathy Jean Riley, born October 31, 1944, in Gadsden, Alabama, to Marvin McDowell and Kathryn Brown, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, January 7, 2026, at the age of 81, in Lufkin, Texas. She moved with her family to Lone Star, Texas during childhood and later attended school in Daingerfield, where she was a high school cheerleader known for her bright spirit and outgoing personality.
During the summer between her junior and senior year, Kathy met the love of her life, AC Riley. They were married in May of 1963 and built a lifelong partnership rooted in faith, devotion, and deep love. Together, they made their home in Tyler, Texas, where they raised their two sons, Chris Riley and Kevin Riley, building a family centered on encouragement, hard work, and strong values.
Kathy was known for lifting people up and inspiring them to dream big. She believed in speaking hope into others and encouraging them to see more in themselves. She was also joyful and gregarious, often the spark behind gatherings and celebrations, making sure everyone felt welcomed and included.
Lovingly described by many as a “firecracker,” Kathy was never afraid to speak up when she believed something was not right, standing up for her neighbors and her community with courage and determination.
After their sons were grown, Kathy and AC moved to Lufkin, where they became active members of Trinity Baptist Church. Her faith guided every part of her life, and she lived it through service and kindness, including work on church committees that supported local charities such as the Clothes Closet in Lufkin. Her life reflected the strength, wisdom, and diligence of a Proverbs 31 woman through daily actions.
Kathy and AC shared a love of dancing and were active in both the Lufkin and SPJST dance clubs, forming many lasting friendships. They also loved to travel, enjoying many cruises and trips to Spain, Germany, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, and throughout the Caribbean.
Above all, Kathy cherished her family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, and proud grandmother to Connor Riley and his wife Megan, Matthew Riley, Abigail Riley, and Macy Riley. On September 24, 2025, she joyfully welcomed her first great-grandchild, Carter Riley, a moment that brought her great happiness.
Kathy was preceded in death by her sister, Peggy Shock, and her brother, Joe McDowell. She is survived by her husband, AC Riley; her sons, Chris Riley and his wife Tammy, and Kevin Riley and his wife Michelle; her grandchildren and great-grandson; her brothers, Marvin McDowell and his wife Diane, and Glen McDowell and his wife Ann; her sister-in-law, Sam McDowell, wife of her late brother Joe; and many extended family members and friends.
Kathy loved her Lord first, then her family, and was devoted to her church and her community. She lifted others, brought people together, and stood up for what she believed was right. Her legacy of faith, love, and encouragement will continue to inspire all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Baptist Church, Student Ministry or Outreach Ministry, 1641 FM 325, Lufkin, Texas 75901.
