Katherine Friend Saunders

Memorial services for Katherine Friend Saunders, 99, of Lufkin will be held Friday, July 17, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. in the Henderson Chapel of First United Methodist Church Lufkin with Dr. Robert C. Shield officiating.

Mrs. Saunders was born October 15, 1926 in Marshall, Texas to the late Johnnie (Sanders) and Robert Craig Friend, and died Monday, July 6, 2026 in Lufkin.

Mrs. Saunders graduated from Waskom High School in Waskom, Texas. She earned a Bachelors degree in Bacteriology/Chemistry at the University of Texas and a Master of Education degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. She taught English at Lufkin High School for many years and assisted her husband, Dr. Roy D. Saunders, Jr. DVM in establishing Angelina Animal Hospital. Mrs. Saunders was a member of First United Methodist Church Lufkin.

Survivors include her daughters, Greg and Susan Saunders Cox, Marcia Saunders Waller, Laurie Saunders Brown and Kathy Hutson, and Daryl and Robin Saunders Ostrander; grandchildren, Cathy Cox Buckner and Oscar, John Cox and Lauren, Carrie Cox Johnson and Chris, Cody Cox and Rachel, Lynsey Brown Ginsberg and Sheldon, Louis Brown and Jessica, Katie Ostrander and Alex Gajeski, and Ross Ostrander; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Moore, Connor Cox, Cooper Cox, Haleigh Reed, Matti Cox, Jett Cox, Ellie Cox, Madelyn Ginsberg, Katelyn Ginsberg, Hollyn Ginsberg, Hank Brown, and Lane Brown; and great-great-grandchild, A.J. Kerr.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Dr. Roy D. Saunders, Jr.; and her sister, Margaret J. Friend.
