Graveside services with military honors and masonic rites for John Vernon Short, 93, of Norman, Oklahoma, formerly of Lufkin, will be held Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 3:30 p.m. in the Whitehouse Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the U.S. Army Honor Guard, with masonic rites under the auspices of the Lufkin Masonic Lodge #669 A.F. & A.M.
Mr. Short was born June 10, 1923 in Angleton, Texas to the late Nellie Jane (Bradbury) and Edward Valentine Short, and died Sunday, April 30, 2017 in Norman, Oklahoma.
Mr. Short was a 1941 graduate of Hudson High School where he played basketball and tennis, and ran track. He served in the U.S. Army, Company H, 29th Infantry Regiment from December 1942 to October 1945, and defended our country with distinction. His first and only job after the war was with Lufkin Industries where he worked in the Trailer Division for more than 43 years before retiring.
Mr. Short was an avid hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman, and shared these hobbies with his children, grandchildren, and friends. He was a Mason with the Lufkin Masonic Lodge #669 A.F. & A.M. His last years were spent in Norman, Oklahoma near his family.
Survivors include his sons, John Edward Short and wife Janice and Everett Ronald Short and wife Barbara; grandchildren, Jeremy Short and wife Tessa, Matthew Short and wife Amanda, Melissa Short, Thomas Short and wife Loren, Carolyn Short Wood and husband Chris; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Ralph Miller; and nieces, nephews and many friends, both in Texas and Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of almost 50 years, Hazel Luprell (Keller) Short; and sisters, Maureen Short, Kathleen Harris, and Florine Short.
Pallbearers will be Masons with the Lufkin Masonic Lodge #669 A.F. & A.M.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Carroway Funeral Home.
