John Clifford DuBose, age 84, passed away peacefully in his Lufkin home on December 21, 2025.
John was born in Jasper, Texas and lived the entirety of his life in the surrounding areas of East Texas. Clifford, as his high school friends knew him, was a member of the Jasper High School Class of 1959 and kept in touch with several classmates through reunions over the years. He was known to greet you with a smile and a good "remember when" story.
John's early career days were with PPG as a lab technician in Beaumont, Texas. In 1982, John changed careers to be a high school teacher and coach. In his 20+ years in the Texas school system with kids of all backgrounds, he encouraged learning, scolded plenty, and improved more baseball fields and players than he could count. There were always entertaining catch phrases from Coach like "attaboy, girl," "getcha head outcha rear, son" and "no, I cannot eat any faster". John was most grateful to have actively coached each of his own five kids at some point in their sporting adventures.
In retirement, John enjoyed fishing, traveling with his wife Peggy, improving his yard, woodworking, and respecting the 5:00 quitting time for a beverage on the back porch with his dog. Of the hours upon hours of retirement spent in "the shop", the most cherished ones were those shared with his grandsons, letting them do all the things their parents didn't approve of, educating them on the joys of classic country music, and making memories that would last a lifetime.
John is survived by his wife of 43 years, Peggy DuBose; sons, John Steven DuBose and wife Doris of Huntington, Jack Stanley DuBose and wife Amy of Beaumont, Gerald Allen DuBose; stepson, Derek Paret and wife Ofelia of San Antonio; and stepdaughter, Brandy Nickels and husband Jeff of Denver. He also leaves behind grandsons, Carter Nickels, Blake Nickels, Levi Nickels, and Brandon Paret, who will eat Blue Bell ice cream in his honor forevermore.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John D. and Versie Mae DuBose; brothers, Alfred DuBose and Carl D. DuBose; and sister, Allie Sue Hathaway.
John was loved and he will be missed.
