John H. Courtenay

John H. Courtenay, 95, of Lufkin died Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at his residence. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.

Mr. Courtenay was born April 16, 1922 in Greenport, New York to the late Mary Elizabeth (Halpin) and John Clifford Courtenay. He had resided in Lufkin since 1966. Mr. Courtenay served in the U.S. Navy as an Aircraft Machinist Mate and retired from the U.S. Forest Service following 37 years of employment. Mr. Courtenay was a Boy Scout Leader for 27 years and was active in the Boy Scouts for 50 years. He was a volunteer for the Texas Forestry Museum, Lufkin Tree Board, and Memorial Hospital, where he cleaned the popcorn pots for many years.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Rick Olds of Nacogdoches and Mary and Roy Smith of Fort Lupton, Colorado; son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Carol Courtenay of Hot Springs, Arkansas; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jeanette (Bubb) Courtenay; brother, Walter Courtenay; and sister-in-law, Jean Bubb.
