Funeral services for John Charles Cooper, 91, of Zavalla will be held Friday, September 7, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Zavalla First Baptist Church with Pastor Stephen Forrest officiating. Interment will follow in the Zavalla Cemetery.
Mr. Cooper was born October 18, 1926 in Garrison, Texas to the late Ida Mittie (Weatherly) and Andrew Berry Cooper, and died Monday, September 3, 2018 in a local hospital.
Mr. Cooper resided in Zavalla most of his life. He served his country as an 82
nd
Airborne Division Paratrooper in the United States Army. He was a member of the Angelina Masonic Lodge #1263 A.F. & A.M. in Zavalla. He loved reading, gardening, and being a cowboy. He enjoyed Sunday lunches surrounded by all his family, and entertaining us with his stories about his life. Mr. Cooper was a Deacon at Zavalla First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Jo Cooper of Zavalla; daughter, Elizabeth Ray and husband Robert, Jr. of Lufkin; sons, Walter Cooper and wife Darla and William Cooper and wife Fonda, all of Zavalla; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Billie Cooper of Prattville, Alabama; brother-in-law, William Wade of Zavalla; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Dorothy Elaine Cooper; brother, Don Cooper; and sister, Jean Pickard.
Pallbearers will be Preston Cooper, Robert Ray, Matthew Cooper, Joseph Havard, Adam Havard, Chris Wade, Cole Strait, Chris Hawk, John M. Cooper, and George Vincent.
Honorary pallbearers will be James Pickard and William Wade.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Carroway Funeral Home in Huntington.
