Joel "Big Daddy" Towers

Funeral services for Joel “Big Daddy” Towers, 86, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Cindy Doran officiating. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the Lower Chireno Cemetery in Chireno.

Mr. Towers was born November 6, 1932 in El Paso, Texas to the late Raquel (Gonzales) and Flavio Ramon Torres, Sr., and died Tuesday, November 13, 2018 in a local hospital.

Mr. Towers had resided in Lufkin for 45 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force and retired from Texas Foundries following 25 years of employment. Mr. Towers was a member of Keltys United Methodist Church.

Mr. Towers, also known as “Big Daddy” and “Poppa Joe”, was a jolly soul who loved people and never met a stranger. His hobbies were many but he loved dancing all of his life. He also loved riding motorcycles through the piney wood backroads with his friends and was still an avid rider at 86. Recently he put together a train consisting of a riding mower, six barrels and a caboose. Joe could be seen giving children and adults rides at parades, church events, and many other events. He was a very caring, giving and special man and will be loved and missed by many.

Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Laura “Crickett” and Glenn Lenderman and Belinda Jo Towers of Lufkin; granddaughter and husband, Kellie and Shawn Farrell of Lufkin; sister-in-law, Yolanda Torres of El Paso; special friend, Ruth Welch of Lufkin; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and an abundance of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maeseale (Hall) Towers; and brothers and sister-in-law, Ruben Torres and Flavio, Jr. and Ramona Torres.

Pallbearers will be Jason Heflin, Dennis Taylor, Troy Cook, Chris Powell and Jimmy Torres.

Honorary pallbearers will be Marvin Page, Tom Raney, Rob Tomkins and Michael Torres.

Memorial contributions may be made to the SPJST Lodge #191, 197 Hughes Road, Lufkin, Texas 75901.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
