Funeral services for Joel Talmadge Newman, 88, of Lufkin will be held Sunday, June 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Van Johnson officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mr. Newman was born July 18, 1929 at his home in Chester, Texas to the late Minnie Charcie (Sprayberry) and John Newman, and passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2018 in a local nursing home.
Mr. Newman was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He attended Lufkin High School and retired from Champion Paper Mill after 42 years of service. Mr. Newman served in the U.S. Navy as a 2nd Class Petty Officer from 1952-1956 which was during the Korean War. He then served 4 years in the reserves. He was stationed aboard the USS Yancey which shipped in and out of Oakland, California. Mr. Newman was a charter and cornerstone member of Herty Baptist Church. He served the church as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher.
Survivors include his daughter, Charlotte Ann Newman of Lufkin; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Jo and Jim Fox of Lake Kiowa; granddaughters, Melissa Jo (Fox) Moses and husband Chris of McKinney, Cheryl Lynn Fox of Plano, and Whitney Ann (Fox) Anderson and husband Reid of Irving; brother and sister-in-law, Carlton and Carol Newman of Austin; brother, Gene Newman of Lufkin; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dean and Buddy Hamilton of Kerrville; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie (Poole) Newman; mother, Minnie Charcie (Sprayberry) Faulkner Newman; father, John Newman; sister, Lutherene (Faulkner) Morton and husband Clint; brothers, John Newman and wife Florence, and Jerry Newman; nephews, Craig Denum and George Newman; and niece, Lynn Scott.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Morton, Wyman Morton, David Morton, David Murphy, Mike Claude and Bubba Loggins.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of Herty Baptist Church.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home.
