Joe Edd Smitherman

Memorial services for Joe Edd Smitherman of Kennard will be held Saturday, August 8, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Timberland Drive church of Christ with Reagan McClenny officiating.

Joe Edd Smitherman passed away peacefully at his home in Kennard, Texas on Monday, August 3, 2026, at the age of 93.

Joe was born on January 1, 1933, in Kennard, Texas, to William and Blue Eyes (Steed) Smitherman. During his childhood, he helped his family on their Texas designated Century Farm, caring for livestock and raising crops.

Joe proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army and served in the mortar tracking unit. He was promoted to Sergeant. After returning home, he settled in Crane, Texas, where he married the love of his life, Juanell Heard. Together they built a life in Crane, where Joe worked for many years as a Pumper and finally a Superintendent at Hunt Oil Company. Following his retirement, Joe and Juanell returned to the Smitherman family farm in Kennard. There, Joe renovated and expanded the family home, where they spent the remainder of their lives together. In their later years, they loved watching their birds and tending their flowers.

A man of deep faith, Joe was a devoted member, deacon, teacher, part-time preacher, and elder at Mary Street church of Christ in Crane. In Lufkin, Texas, Joe served for several decades as a teacher and elder of the Timberland Drive church of Christ.

Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Juanell (Heard) Smitherman.

He is survived by his daughter, Joonna Trapp and husband, Lynn; his son, Jim Smitherman and wife, Tammy; his grandchildren, Jimmy Trapp and wife, Clarissa, Micah Horgan-Trapp and husband, Jase, Josh Smitherman and wife, Chelsea, Joseph Smitherman, and Jessica Parimore and husband, Austin; and his great-grandchildren, Ryker, Easley, Blakley, Tripp, Truett, Troy, and Aurelia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Timberland Drive church of Christ, 912 S. Timberland Drive, Lufkin, Texas 75901.
