Graveside services for Jo Ann Stewart, 91, of Lufkin will be held Monday, August 19, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Wells with The Reverend Randall K. Green officiating.
Mrs. Stewart was born December 17, 1932 in Liberty, Texas to the late Josephine (Brown) and Walter Abshier. She passed away Thursday, August 15, 2024 in Lufkin.
Mrs. Stewart was a teacher at Lufkin High School for 10 years then worked as a school secretary until her retirement. She received Bachelor and Masters degrees from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. She was a member of Christ Congregational Church.
Her favorite activities were travel, crossword puzzles, playing Canasta, and reading poetry. Mrs. Stewart and her late husband, Johnie, were members of Pine Squares Dance Club for 32 years and enjoyed visiting other dance clubs as they traveled. She was also a member of the East Texas Cloggers for 17 years, and she enjoyed serving as a volunteer at Hospice in the Pines. The couple traveled extensively and enjoyed 15 cruises to various destinations.
Her survivors include her sister-in-law, Jeanetta Stewart of Lufkin; nieces, Terri Stewart Smith of Tyler, Jana Stewart Scharnberg of Atlanta, and Judy Turner of Waskom; and nephew, Homer Stewart Hawthorne of Benbrook.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three older sisters, and her beloved husband of 52 years, Johnie Stewart.
She felt especially blessed by a special couple in her life, Steve and Theda Moseley, who did so much for her everyday needs and her spiritual needs the last years of her life. Steve was unofficially her “adopted son” in whom she was well pleased. She felt God walked with her all her blessed life, and she looked forward to spending eternity with Him.
Special thanks and gratitude to the staff at PineCrest Retirement community for the loving care given to Mrs. Stewart.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Christ Congregational Church, 105 Saddle Creek Drive, Lufkin, Texas 75904, or Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75904.
