Jimmy Tilton Powell, 82, of Lufkin passed away Sunday, August 4, 2024. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home. Private services will be held at a later date.
Jimmy was born December 26, 1941 in Freeport, Texas to the late Versie Irene (Herren) and John Tilton Powell. He had resided in Lufkin for 23 years.
Jimmy had a natural talent for music and began teaching himself to play the banjo at the early age of 12. Throughout his life he developed a love for bluegrass music and enjoyed time spent with friends and family at Sacul, where he played in the Wise County Bluegrass Band.
Jimmy was self employed in the laminate countertop business. He was passionate about restoring vintage cars and loved collecting antiques.
Jimmy was a sweet and gentle soul, loved by many, and he passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Marilyn (Mathews) Powell of Lufkin; sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Laura Powell of Seabrook, Lloyd and Deborah Powell of Rusk, and Richard (Joe) and Lisa Powell of Lufkin; stepdaughters and son-in-law, Gina (Morgan) and Dayton Jones, and Cathy (Morgan) Stubblefield, all of Lufkin; grandchildren, Michael, Aaron, Kristen and Troy, Sara, Jamie, Savannah and Casey, Taylor and Dustin, Keaton, Andrew and Amanda, Emily and Austin, Olivia and Tristan, and Israel; numerous great-grandchildren; sisters, Lillie Irene Seeley and Marjorie June Powell, both of Normangee; brother, Gerald Lee Powell of Normangee; brothers-in-law, James Mathews of Trinity, Don Basham and Ken Akers, both of Lufkin; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, LaChelle (Donner) Powell; brothers, Louie Elton Powell, John Edward Powell, and James Paul Powell; sisters, Mary Louise Bennett, Virginia Ruth Fletcher, Geraldine Ann Tatum, and Vera Irene Powell; sisters-in-law, Betty Basham, Marie Coulter and husband Edmond, and Mabel Akers; and brothers-in-law, Earl Mathews and Tillman Mathews.
