Ms. English was born October 3, 1930 in Chireno, Texas to the late Jennie Wilma (Ennis) and Roy Clark Hurst, and died Monday, January 8, 2018 in Austin.
Ms. English resided in Lufkin for 65 years. She moved with her family from Nacogdoches to Lufkin, where she began her senior year at Lufkin High School, graduating with the class of 1949. Heading back to Nacogdoches, she enrolled in SFA and spent the next few years learning to teach. Ms. English married while attending SFA and graduated with a degree in Education. After teaching at Diboll High School for a few years, she chose to be a homemaker. She took great pride in raising her two daughters, while creating a beautiful home and using her wonderful cooking skills. A member of First Baptist Church Lufkin and the Dogwood Garden Club, Ms. English put her skills in flower arranging to use as she and best friend Ross Gibbs assisted Louise Dyer with weekly floral decor for the church. She also participated in floral arranging contests as an arranger, as well as a judge. She volunteered as a member of the Lufkin Service League and the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Once her girls were grown, Ms. English ventured back into the working world helping others beautify their homes and tables at The Very Thing. She later worked at Schmidt’s in Nacogdoches and Clark’s Dept. Store in Lufkin helping women with fashions. Though known to most as Jean, throughout her years she was affectionately known as Roy Jean, Momma Jean, and Jeana.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Terry Berke of Austin and Kay and Philip Goodwin of Lufkin; grandchildren and spouses, Allison and Jonathan Green, Elizabeth Goodwin, Katherine and Ben Rolf, Robert and Jessica Goodwin, Hannah and Brian Roy, Jacob Berke, and Rachel Berke; nine great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and E’Lisa Hurst of Lufkin; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John Hurst; and sister, Billie Walker.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Lufkin Building Fund or Second Helping Food Recovery Program, both at 106 E. Bremond Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 75901.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Friday afternoon prior to the services.
