James D. "Jim" Mewbourn

Funeral services for James D. “Jim” Mewbourn, 83, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Jimmy Hedges and Brother Scott Reed officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.

Mr. Mewbourn was born March 21, 1935 in Canton, Texas to the late Jeffie Lee (Byron) and James Curtis “J.C.” Mewbourn, and died Wednesday, June 13, 2018 in a local hospital.

Mr. Mewbourn had resided in Lufkin for almost 60 years. He served in the U.S. Army as 1st Lieutenant with the 49th Armored Division and retired from Lufkin Industries following 37 years of employment. Mr. Mewbourn earned a Bachelors Degree in Engineering and Technology and had taken courses toward a Masters Degree. He loved to hunt, fish, play golf, and was known at PineCrest as the jigsaw puzzle king. Mr. Mewbourn was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Mary Ann (McIlwain) Mewbourn of Lufkin; son, Clay Mewbourn of Plano; daughter and son-in-law, Lesley and Phillip Keltner of Corsicana; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Kelley and Louis Zeleskey of Houston; granddaughter, Hannah Keltner; step-grandchildren, Brittany and Mary Kelley Zeleskey, Annie and husband Thad Hopper; brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Patsy Mewbourn of Lufkin; sister-in-law, Melvalene Cohen of Houston; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Nancy Joyce Mewbourn in 2000; and sisters, Ann Folmar and LaNita Jean Mewbourn.

Pallbearers will be Marvin Slusher, Elton Fenley, James Wash, Ray Funderburk, Dick McKay, and Bill Moreau.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Bush, Don Brawley, and members of the Dick McKay Sunday school class at Calvary Baptist Church.

The family extends special thanks to the PineCrest Rehab, the nurses at Woodland Heights, and Heart to Heart Hospice for their care of Mr. Mewbourn.

Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 571, Lufkin, Texas 75902.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
