James Curtis “Dick” McKay, 93, of Lufkin, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 12, 2025. Dick was born on January 5, 1932, in Lufkin, Texas to Tina Belle (Deaton) and William Oliver McKay. He graduated from Lufkin High School in 1948. He married the love of his life, Anna Royce Hughes, on December 27, 1952. Dick proudly served three years in the US Army in Germany as a radio repairman in the signal corps.
After his military service, Dick and Anna moved to Austin, so that he could complete his college degree at the University of Texas. After his graduation, they returned to Lufkin, where they made their home and raised their three children. Dick began working for Lufkin Foundry and Machine Company, which later became Lufkin Industries, in August 1956, in the billing department. He served as Machinery Division Purchasing Agent, as Vice President and Manager of the Industrial Supplies Division and as Vice President and Manager of the Trailer Division. He retired from Lufkin Industries in 1986.
After retirement, he kept busy volunteering with Godtel Ministries, Habitat for Humanity and with a team of medical and dental professionals who traveled to Mexico several times a year, providing care for people who had no access to healthcare. He served as a Deacon of Calvary Baptist Church, and each summer he would make snow cones and supervise games for the children attending Vacation Bible School. For many years, Dick taught Men’s Sunday School at Calvary Baptist. He was proud of his family, and he enjoyed spending time with them, especially his six grandchildren. He and Anna were frequent travelers to Alabama and Arlington to see the grandkids. Dick loved his faith, his family, all dogs, and the University of Texas Longhorns.
Survivors include his son, Kevin McKay and wife Lou; daughters, Michelle Wilmoth, Cecile Skelton and husband Glenn; his beloved grandchildren, Matthew McKay and wife Abby, Morgan McKay, Claudia Perez and husband Juan, Anna Gemeny and husband Chris, Ben Wilmoth and wife Judi, Sarah Battles and husband Brett; 10 precious great-grandchildren, Angel, Adrian, Leilani, Isaac Curtis, McKayla, Barrett, Sienna, Easton, John Sawyer and Ava Claire; his sister, Sara (McKay) Rich; and several nieces and nephews.
