Memorial services for James Carol McComb, 82, of Lufkin will be held Friday, February 27, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Steve Cowart officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.
James was born in Pasadena, Texas to Sleeta and Joe McComb, the fifth of eight children, on November 24, 1943, and passed away Friday, February 13, 2026 at The Joseph House.
He graduated from Galena Park High School in 1962. He then attended San Jacinto North Junior College and played on their baseball team before enrolling in Stephen F. Austin University where he graduated with an English degree and minor in Journalism and met his future wife Wanda in typing class. They went on to have two children, Stacie and Cody. James started as an English teacher at Galena Park High School and worked at Plumbing Supplies before starting his long-term career with State Farm in 1978 as an Agent. He successfully grew his agency in North Shore and then moved in 1990 and opened a new Agency in Huntsville, Texas. He successfully grew his agency and won trips to Hawaii, Germany, Canada, Austria, Bahamas, etc.
James was a devoted husband, dad, brother, friend, and POP. He loved life to the fullest. He loved his place in the “country” where he could work on the pasture and raise cows and spend time with his brothers. He loved joking around and was charming with everyone he met. In 2014 he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s Disease. Hospice of the Pines served him at home since August 2022 then he moved out of the home to The Joseph House in summer 2023.
He is preceded in death by his father, Joe; mother, Sleeta; and sisters, Oma Lou, Pat, Dortha and Wanda Sue.
James is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Wanda; brothers, Gene (Jill), Robert, and Steve (Cathy); daughter, Stacie (son-in-law Jason) Bullock; son, Cody; granddaughters, Mia and Lorin; and countless family and friends.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to Hospice in the Pines and The Joseph House for their devotion and loving attention to James.
