James Paul Mayberry

Funeral Mass for James Paul Mayberry, 92, of Lufkin will be held Friday, August 23, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church with Fr. Joby Thomas and Deacon Gary Trevino officiating. Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Thursday evening in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.

Paul was born October 6, 1931 in Austin, Texas to the late Ted James Mayberry and Annie Myrtle (Fellers) Mayberry, and died Friday, August 16, 2024 in a local nursing home.

Paul graduated from Bay City High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1955 and received a B.B.A. from Sam Houston State University in 1957. He married Lee Vollmering of Bay City in 1956. In 1962 he moved to Lufkin to be the Business Manager at the start of Lufkin State School. In 1977 he received a M.Ed. from Stephen F. Austin State University. Paul was proud of his work at the State School and worked his way to Assistant Superintendent then Interim Superintendent prior to his retirement in 1987.

Paul believed in giving back to his community. He served as President of Lufkin Host Lions Club, District Governor of Lions International and was inducted into the Texas Lions Hall of Fame in 2011. He had been Chairman of the Z&OO Railroad Advisory Board and Rodeo Coordinator of the Angelina County Rodeo Association. He was also President and a charter member of the Lufkin State School Federal Credit Union, now a part of Genco, a charter member of Angelina County Crimestoppers, and a member of the Lufkin City Council. Paul had been President of Angelina County Farm Bureau, was a Friend of Kurth Memorial Library, Chairman for three of his six year term on the Angelina County Appraisal District Review Board, and had been President of the Angelina/Nacogdoches Counties Forest Landowners Association.

Paul served his churches. He was Charter President of the St. Patrick Parish Council, Past President of St. Patrick Catholic School Board, Chairman of the Parish Finance Committee, and was a charter member of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church.

Survivors include his son, Mark Mayberry and wife Regina; granddaughter, Ashley Mayberry and fiancé Blaine Jones; grandson, Jacob Mayberry and wife Hannah; and great-grandchildren, Tate, Teal, Sydney, and Anderson Mayberry; and special friends, W.W. Beaver, Dr. B.D. Rhodes, Tom Gann, Dr. Robert Kistler, John Lee Slaughter, Helen Roberts, Royce Garrett, and Elton McCune.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Myrtle Mayberry; wife, Lee (Vollmering) Mayberry; and sister, Joyce Sterry.

Pallbearers will be members of the Lufkin Host Lions Club: Nathan Gann, Will Alvis, Will Price, Scott Neill, Brian Harkness, and Jeff Harkness.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Paul Mayberry to St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church Building Fund, 1611 Feagin Drive, Lufkin, Texas 75904 or Affinity Hospice, 2708 S. Medford Drive, Lufkin, Texas 75901.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Carroway Funeral Home.
